Going for a Drive
The skies were grey when we woke up this morning, however we really wanted to get out and go somewhere so we got in the car and went for a drive. We really didn't have any particular place that we wanted to visit, so we just drove around. The first place of interest that we stopped was Table Head, Glace Bay where Guglielmo Marconi sent a wireless transatlantic message to Poldhu, Cornwall in 1902. This was the first time we had ever visited the site and you could see the foundations still in place where the large towers were set up at the station. Adjacent to the site was a museum, we decided to check it out. It was quite interesting to read up on Marconi. Our Italian friends may be interested in knowing that Marconi was born in Bologna, Italy. Tyler's favourite part of the museum was the buttons that you can push that showed the wireless signals.
After our Marconi visit, we got back into the car and drove along the coast in Glace Bay. Steve has taken a great interest in the company houses here. The company houses are left over from the coal mining days and are 85 years old. A lot of them are in poor shape. It is a shame such great history became neglected like that.
Then it was off to the Northside where we stopped for chicken at Lick-A-Chick and kept on driving along the highway until we came to the road that leads out to Point Aconi. Steve had never been out that way before. While there we came across some lobster fishermen who were in search of some of their traps. The high winds from last night must have carried the traps away.
Finally we were headed back home after a full day of driving around. We took a detour through Groves Point area which offered some really pretty scenes. It was a nice way to end our day. When we got home, we asked Tyler to tell Nanny what he had seen on his drive since Nanny decided to stay home today. Tyler's reply was the house that had the buttons he could push. He was referring to the Marconi museum. We were glad that he liked the historical part the best and perhaps he had his first history lesson.
We would like to wish our neighbour and friend, Mr. Baillie, a very Happy Birthday! Hope you have a nice birthday and all the best for the year ahead.
